Arx is a first-person, 3D RPG in the vein of Ultima Underworld. You explore a large underground, medieval, fantasy organization inhabited by both monsters and conversive non-player characters. Your character will increase in skill and attributes as they level up and many different weapons, armor, and items will be available to equip them. You will be able to cast over fifty spells using a rune-based system. A few of the technical details include highly detailed, mesh-basedmonsters in 32-bit, real-time physics, breakable items, dynamic lighting and excellent artificial intelligence provided by a scripting language.

he most immediate change from Dungeon Keeper is in its graphics; the world is now fully 3D. Where monsters were previously sprites, they are now 3D models. You have saved the island Khorinis from the forces of evil in Gothic I and Gothic II. Now it is time to travel to the realms of the mainland. Invading Orcs have enslaved the human kingdom. Left 4 Dead (L4D) is a new action title from Valve, creators of the Counter-Strike and Half-Life games, that promises to redefine the co-operative genre as those titles did for multiplayer and single player action games.

Set in a modern day survival-horror universe, the co-operative gameplay of L4D casts four “Survivors” in an epic struggle against hordes of swarming zombies and terrifying “Boss Infected” mutants.

The Survivor Co-op Game Mode is played out across four sprawling campaigns, set in urban and rural environments. Each campaign has an over-riding team objective, and is comprised of five large maps. The campaigns link together to tell the story of the Survivor’s escape to safety. The team of four Survivors may be comprised of 1 to 4 human players, allowing for single player and multiplayer co-op games.

Next generation AI technology powers all non-player Survivor and zombie characters. This is facilitated by the AI Director, a pool of systems used to procedurally generate a unique experience by monitoring the players’ experiences and tailoring the pacing and difficulty of action for each game. This makes for a different experience each time the game is played.

In Left 4 Dead’s Vs. Mode players may play as a Survivor or as one of four types of “Boss Infected.” Each of the “Boss Infected” possesses an exceptional mutant ability – such as a 50-foot tongue lasso (Smoker) or a giant belly full of explosive methane gas (Boome) – instead of traditional firearms.

It happened two years after the collapse of the financial markets. Our world changed. The game's story follows the path of a mercenary unit sent to the Amazonian jungle. They were sent there to complete another mission (finding a missing plane a retrieve a valuable package from it), but their plane is getting shot down by enemy troops. Some of their comrades are dead and most of their supplies are gone, but they have to find a way out from the jungle alive. A young archeologist locates them and manages to persuade them to rescue her. From here on the mercenaries fight their way through Juarez's soldiers toward the archeologist, who is the only hope for them to escape. On their way, they find themselves in situations where they help the inhabitants and the loyal government military and, with their actions, they change the outcome of the civil war. For more detailed information, see the storyline appendix of the design document. The Game World: Setting The story takes place in the last month of 2011. The world is recovering from a large scale economical crisis. The crisis made life in the third world countries even harder, and much more unsafe. In South America, huge territories are under the control of local warlords and guerilla organizations. They built their own "kingdom" in these places, and the government has little or no power in these separated areas.

Brazil was an exception until now, its political integrity remained fairly strong, but there are several organizations and individuals in the background who want to change that.

The location is the Amazonian rainforest in the Brazilian state: Amazonas. The area is far from civilization and seldom populated. Most of the population is concentrated in the city of Manaus hundreds of miles east of the game area. The local civilization lives mostly near the rivers and on the few plantations. These plantations generate most of the state's income and their owners are considered the most powerful men in the state, and in the country. Technically they control the state together with some local warlords. They are not only growing coffee however. Some of them make a living from selling arms to the guerillas in Colombia and Peru, while others are growing coca leaves to produce cocaine or destroying the rainforest and selling the valuable trees.

One of the most powerful plantation owners in the area is Juan Pablo Juarez. In the civilized world he is a recognized and trusted businessman and a well known and generous patron of ancient native arts and archeology. In reality the source of his fortune is the huge amount of weapons he sold to the guerillas and tons of arts illegally smuggled out of the country.

He built an impressive satellite system near his hacienda where he employs skilled archeologists to look for ruins hidden deep in the jungle. The construction of the satellite control complex was big news even in the foreign media as it was said to be the newest and best archeological research center.

But in reality, the complex's real objective is to support Juarez's plan to create his own country in Amazonas. There are state-of-the art satellite, communication and radar jamming equipment in the complex, which can render every such system above the state useless. He also created a whole army of soldiers trained and supervised by experienced foreign mercenaries. He also created a hot situation in the state, which he could make even hotter and create a civil war, and as its leader, create an independent country in Brazil. To make it easier, he bought some leaders of the military and allied with several warlords.

Not long before he initiates the civil war he employs a young female archeologist to the satellite archeologist team. Not long after began working, the archeologist discovered that the satellite system has hidden abilities, and there are strange things happening in the area. She thought about resigning from the job and leaving the country but she thought that Juarez won't let her. She decided not to say anything and find a way to escapee. It is not an easy task however: the satellite control center is surrounded by the jungle and Juarez's soldiers. Even if she somehow manages to escape from the facility, she would die in the jungle long before she can reach the civilization.

Half-Life: Counter-Strike is one of the most unusual PC game releases in months. And if you don't have the exceptional Half-Life, the new retail edition of Counter-Strike is a chance to get a stand-alone version of this outstanding multiplayer mod. The retail package also includes stand-alone versions of other multiplayer mods and game modes that normally require Half-Life, the best of which are also available free off the Internet: Team Fortress Classic, Opposing Force Multiplayer, Firearms, Redemption, Ricochet, and Wanted. Counter-Strike itself is a superb game that fully deserves top billing in this release.

Counter-Strike divides players into teams of terrorists and counterterrorists in four game modes: rescue/hold hostages, bomb target/defuse bomb, escape from/guard an area, and assassinate/guard a VIP. None of these ideas are particularly original, but they're well implemented, and they strike an effective balance between realistic stealth and frenzied action. The thematically varied maps maximize tactical possibilities with alternate routes, multiple levels, and abundant cover. Games are played in short rounds, and when you're killed, you sit out the round as an invisible observer; there are no deathmatch-style respawns. This creates a strong social aspect, because with "dead"players chatting, there can be an enormous sense of tension for the remaining players stalking each other. Another big impetus to stay alive is that the more successful you and your team are each round, the more money you earn for buying bigger and better weapons. Unfortunately this can lead to a huge imbalance in firepower when one team wins a few consecutive rounds.

One of Counter-Strike's biggest appeals has always been the selection of weapons. In addition to a knife and assorted grenades, there's a wide variety of accurately modeled pistols, shotguns, submachine guns, assault rifles, and sniper rifles. Three new weapons have been added to version 1.0: the H&K UMP .45, FN Five-Seven, and the SIG SG-550, though theretail version of the game uses invented names for all weapons.

Each weapon has unique characteristics, so mastering them all and learning which is best for different situations is a lot of fun, and it adds replay value. For instance, high-caliber weapons can penetrate thin walls and doors, which makes lugging a heavy belt-fed machine gun worthwhile when the enemy has been doing more hiding than fighting. Guns also have varied kicks, which makes full automatic fire a "spray and pray" affair - as in real life, short, controlled bursts are best for accurate fire. Effective weapon ranges are well simulated, so shotguns are brutal in close quarters and useless in large open spaces. Location-specific damage modeling means that shots to the head are more likely to get an instant kill.

Another part of the weaponry's appeal is the superlative sound effects. The guns sound remarkably realistic and powerful, which makes them viscerally fun to shoot. Equal care is given to othergame sounds, like explosions, injuries from weapons or falling, glass shattering, and so on. Another good feature is the various audio messages you can send to teammates. They cover a whole range of warnings, status reports, and requests for backup. The only problem is that they all use the same voice, regardless of your team.

The Half-Life graphics engine may be dated now, but Counter-Strike has always used it to its fullest potential. The maps are visually appealing, and they have imaginative texturing and dramatic (though sometimes too dark) lighting effects. The updated character models in version 1.0 now use Valve's model-blending technology, along with even better skins than in the past, which makes for great-looking player graphics. Best of all are the firearm models and skins, which are some of the best you'll find in any shooter.

Heroes of Might and Magic V is the next installment in the venerable and long-standing Heroes of Might and Magic series. Heroes V was released in May of 2006. It is the first time in the product's history that it is being developed by a company aside from New World Computing and 3DO, the publisher. It is the Russian company, Nival Interactive has the main responsibilities for developing Heroes V and its expansions, overseen and published by the world-renowned French game developer, Ubisoft.

In accordance with this new genesis of the game, Nival have also developed an entirely new universe, one that is so diverse and different that it is likened to a mythology. The highest beings of the Heroes of Might and Magic 5 universe are Dragons, who are the basis of religion, beliefs and cosmology in this new world. Each town adopts its own beliefs which are influenced by its interactions with other races throughout history. The six towns that will appear in Heroes V are the humans, Haven, the demons, Inferno, the necromancers, Necropolis, the dark elves, Dungeon, the wizards, Academy, and the elves, Sylvan, with the dark elves being the new addition to the series.

The game itself will be beautifully rendered in 3D, another advancement not seen in any other previous Heroes game. It consists of at least 90 different creatures, 14 in each town. A different set of 6 magic schools live up to the name of 'Magic', while the Dynamic Combat System provides a faster option in battles. There are 6 campaigns which, in total, have over 30 missions which further explore the history behind the towns.

Promising to take the genre of strategy gaming to a whole new level, Heroes of Might and Magic V has all the necessary elements of an addictive, competitive, and highly successful game.
